STONES AND SAINTS
Writer, historian and geographer Brian John will lead a full-day excursion to key sites in North Pembrokeshire which will show how the earliest inhabitants of the area lived and buried their dead. We will visit Pentre Ifan and Carreg Coetan Arthur burial chambers (cromlechs) and discover how they were constructed and used. Pentre Ifan is by far the most spectacular burial chamber in the British Isles.
We will look at Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement sites in the Mynydd Preseli area and will examine standing stones, stone settings and burial mounds on the open moorlands. Some of these sacred sites have strong links with the Arthurian legend. Not far from Mynachlogddu is an oval stone setting called Bedd Arthur -- Arthur's Grave -- and nearby is the site believed by some to be the source of the bluestones of Stonehenge. We will also examine sites connected with Celtic Christianity, including the focal point of the Welsh Church at St David's Cathedral and churches like Nevern on one of the old pilgrim routes. We will see the tallest Celtic Cross in the UK and stones inscribed with the ancient Irish Ogham alphabet.
