SPOOKY TALES BY THE FIRESIDE
An evening of traditional tales of the supernatural with writer Brian John. Brian has collected and published more than 500 folk tales in Pembrokeshire, many of which had previously not been written down. Included are heroic tales, fairytales, and tales of giants and monsters. But tales of the supernatural are the most common ones in the Newport and Cwm Gwaun area -- and Brian will tell some of these tales of omens and premonitions, ghosts and goblins, phantom funerals and corpse candles. He will explain how these tales were used to strengthen the sense of community in a population of scattered farmsteads and cottages and to reinforce the values of society. In some cases we know what the tales mean and where they come from, some are actually very funny, and others are much more mysterious and unsettling.
