NEWPORT
An attractive, bustling coastal town between Fishguard and Cardigan. The town's Welsh name, Trefdraeth, can be translated as 'town by the beach'. Big Beach or Traeth Mawr is a long, golden stretch of sand protected by craggy headlands. The town boasts both a Norman Castle and a medieval Church which stand proudly above this small settlement on the slopes of Carn Ingli mountain. Ancient streets and pathways lead directly to the River Nevern (Nyfer) and to the tidal estuary which is teeming with wildlife. Circular walks from the town lead the visitor to the heights of Carn Ingli (Mount of Angels) with splendid vistas towards Snowdonia, the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland, and the St. David's Peninsula to the west. To east and west of the town the visitor can follow the Pembrokeshire Coast Path with its abundance of wild flowers, seabirds and secret sheltered coves. Uniquely situated at the edge of the enchanting Preseli Mountains, Newport is an ideal centre for touring the many ancient Celtic monuments to be found in the Welsh-speaking area of the National Park. The town must be unique in that it has hardly grown at all since the early Middle Ages -- and this is perhaps the reason for its enduring charm. The town has a variety of shops, numerous art galleries, craft shops, an antique shop, and coffee shops. Pubs and restaurants provide extensive menus, including locally caught sewin, lobster and crab. Sewin is MUCH better than salmon!
