CARN MEINI AND STONEHENGE
Carn Meini can be loosely translated as 'place of stones in a pile'. It is also referred to locally as 'the Dragons Back' since it has a spectacular profile on the crest of a mountain ridge. Some stones from this rocky outcrop of spotted dolerite or bluestone are found on Salisbury Plain, incorporated into the world-famous Stonehenge monument. The tall outer 'Trilithon' stones are of local Wiltshire origin but the smaller, inner ring of bluestones have come, for the most part, from North Pembrokeshire. The debate about how they traveled is one of the most energetic in the whole of modern archaeology! Some believe that glacier ice transported the stones to Salisbury Plain or the Somerset levels and others argue that highly-organized groups of Neolithic men were responsible. Whatever the truth of the matter, the bluestones have a fascination and a power for many people.
