CELTIC CROSSES
There are number of magnificent "Celtic High Crosses" in West Wales magnificently carved with interlaced Celtic knotwork designs and symbols. The two most famous are located in Nevern Churchyard and at the roadside near Carew Castle. There is a tradition that the cross at Nevern was carried to its present position on the back of St David himself but that is not very likely, since St David lived about 500 years before the cross was carved! But it's a nice story......... It is now thought that the tall celtic crosses were carved by stone-masons who were also involved in church building in the early Middle Ages. They seem to have been personal memorials to noblemen belonging to the Celtic tribal community around the time of the Norman Invasion.
